Subject: Implementation of Automatic Lockout Program
Because of the high incidence of students tardy to class we will implement an automatic lockout program beginning immediately as an intervention to correct this problem.
Complete and consistent compliance by all teachers is necessary to the success of this program. The program is simple and requires minimal effort from teachers and consists
Of the following steps:
- At the sound of the tardy bell all teachers will close and lock their classroom doors. The doors will remain locked for twenty minutes and any student attempting to enter the classroom must be denied entry. During this time teachers may not release students from their rooms for any reason.
- After the twenty minutes has elapsed, teachers may unlock may unlock the doors and may release students as needed and in accordance with procedures regarding the use of hallway passes. The teachers must mark any student “Tardy” who enter the classroom after this twenty minute period. Teachers should make referrals for excessive student tardies by following the procedures regarding referring students.
- During the twenty-period, school aides and other school personnel will be sweeping the halls to gather tardy students, document their tardiness, and issue citations. The Discipline Office will be applying disciplinary action as needed.
Teachers who cannot hear the bells are requested to be mindful of the time and fallow these procedures as closely as possible. Teachers whose classroom door are not able to be locked should report such to the Business Office. This program will be Implemented every period, everyday.
In the initial stage of implementation it is anticipated there will be significant numbers of students who will be held by school personnel for documenting before being released to be return to their classes. It is hoped that teachers will understand that this is necessary in order to break the present mindset and restrain students to be punctual. In time, there will be fewer tardy students.
Thank you for your diligent attention to this matter.
