General Membership Meeting

  • Offers an opportunity to take a closer look into our country; encouraged to participate in this organization
  • Become Effective Communicators
  • Participates in the following:
    • Beach Cleanups
    • Canned Food Drives
    • Community Luncheons (Thanksgiving, etc.)
    • Bell Ring (Salvation Army)
    • Christmas Carols (Hospitals, Nursing Homes)
    • Fundraisers (Car Washes, etc.)

Principal’s Report (Mr. Ken Chargualaf)

  • WASC exit report
    • Every Team Member on the WASC commended JFK, excellence in every operational and instructional aspect of the school
    • Powerful learning and active teaching in the classrooms
    • Students are very well behaved; caring attitude
    • Campus is safe; literacy project-assess the ESLRs; monitor student achievement over time
    • Facility is exceptionally well maintained and clean, despite the fact that it’s a temporary campus
    • Everyone demonstrated excellence

  • Curriculum (Ms. Camacho)
    • 3rd Quarter ending 16 March 2011; 4th Quarter begins 17 March 2011
    • Night School First Session ending 23 March 2011; Second Session beginning 24 March 2011. Please see your counselors
    • Summer School Program: JFK has requested that Okkodo and / or Simon Sanchez High Schools host JFK Students for Summer School (slots may be limited) awaiting the Superintendent’s approval. Will provide an update at a later time
  • 29 March 2011 0700-1215 hours – Parent Teacher Conferences (Break from 10:00 to 10:15 AM)
  • 18 – 22 April 2011: Easter Break
  • PA System (Dr. Roberto)
    • Technicians assessed the extent of the damage; may not repair due to the move to the new campus
    • Faculty will continue to use the sirens and the whistles
  • JFK Rebuild:
    • End April/First of May: IBC to complete main construction
    • End of May/First of June: Finishing touches should be completed
    • Request sent to the Superintendent to communicate with Core Tech in allowing containers on campus to load desks, books, equipment, etc.
    • Insurance for the new campus not effective until 01 August 2011
  • Special Programs (Ms. Rosete)
    • 12 March 2011 Saturday (6:00 pm) Senior Parent Meeting at the Tamuning Senior Citizens Center
    • Special Olympics: Looking for volunteers to assist with food, tables, etc.
  • Student Support (Ms. Hanzsek)
    • Lock Outs: School starts at 7:05am, you are considered tardy at 7:15am; 7:16am you will be locked out of the classroom
      • 1st Consequence: Sent to the office for a written warning
      • 2nd Consequence: Lunch Detention
      • 3rd Consequence: Work Detail
      • 4th Consequence: One day Suspension
      • 5th Consequence: Sent to Ms. Hanzsek’s office and Two day Suspension

President’s Report (Marc Pido)

  • Election of JFK PTSA Officers for SY2011-SY2012 at the next JFK PTSA General Membership Meeting
  • WASC was impressed by the politeness and helpfulness of the students
    • Kids love to do the extra curricular activities
    • Loved how the 9th Grade Academy works
    • JFK drives student achievement and how the faculty takes available data and use it to improve the 9th Grade Academy and following through
    • Credit goes to the Teachers and Administrators to make the program successful
    • Challenge: Involvement of the JFK Community to increase student achievement and continue the high energy after the move to the new campus; continue to be resilient in the face of adversity
    • Thank you to the Teachers and the Administration Team

  • No changes to the accounts:
    • Checking Account: $844.46
    • Savings Account: $1, 314.43

Other Topics Discussed

  • Training conducted at the Department of Revenue & Taxation (DRT) for PTOs, PTSA Officers, Treasurer’s, across the island to bring non-profit status into compliance
    • If PTA/PTOs raise money and are not registered as a non-profit nor have a tax exemption with the DRT, you must pay Gross Receipt Taxes (GRT) on fundraising events
    • Priscilla Mendiola (JFK PTSA PRO) and Eunice Aflague (JFK PTSA VP) have attended this DRT Training; JFK PTSA is working on getting into compliance

Issues/Concerns

  • When JFK moves to the new campus, will there be re-districting? (Mr. Andres)

Response: There will be a meeting on 11 March 2011 to discuss the overcrowding in several High Schools and re-districting to include a 5-year trending. Not sure if JFK students will be affected

    • GW is 600-700 students more than what the facility can accommodate
